Sustainability Policy

Sustainability Policy

1. Sustainable Management

  • Sustainability is embedded into how we operate day-to-day, from planning through to guest experience.
  • We maintain a formal Sustainability Policy, reviewed annually.
  • Clear responsibilities are allocated across the team: waste management, biodiversity care, and guest communications.
  • Staff receive training on environmental procedures, safe waste handling, wildlife protection and resource-efficient behaviour.
  • We set annual goals (waste reduction, recycling improvements, biodiversity actions, energy efficiency) and track progress each season.

2. Carbon Reduction

  • We work to lower carbon emissions through efficient equipment, responsible energy use, low-impact travel encouragement, and tree planting.
  • Over 7,000 native trees planted across the site contribute long-term carbon sequestration and habitat creation.
  • Where possible we prioritise local suppliers and contractors to minimise transport emissions.
  • We monitor site energy use and identify reductions as part of our annual review.

3. Energy Efficiency

  • Energy-efficient lighting (LEDs) and appliances are used across the site.
  • Timers, sensors and efficient systems help reduce unnecessary consumption.
  • Regular checks ensure equipment is running correctly and not wasting power.
  • We are exploring opportunities for renewable energy options as part of future site development.

4. Water Stewardship

  • Water-saving fixtures (low-flow taps, dual-flush toilets) fitted across toilets and shower blocks.
  • Leak checks are routine and repairs prioritised quickly.
  • Water use is monitored seasonally to identify trends and improvement areas.
  • Guest signage encourages short showers and mindful water use.

5. Waste, Recycling & Circular Practices

  • Comprehensive recycling facilities across the site with clear, easy-to-follow signage.
  • Investment in dedicated recycling infrastructure, robust processes, and trained team members to ensure waste is separated correctly.
  • Food waste separation and diversion from landfill where available.
  • Ongoing reduction of single-use items (including in staff areas and accommodation).
  • Supplier packaging reviewed and challenged where excessive.
  • We are exploring whether reverse vending would be viable

6. Nature, Conservation & Biodiversity

  • Over 7,000 trees planted, increasing habitat diversity and strengthening woodland corridors.
  • Mixed mowing regimes, hedgerow protection, wild areas left undisturbed, and a site-wide approach to supporting pollinators.
  • We follow ecological management advice and review practices annually.
  • Previous recognition includes being Highly Commended in the David Bellamy Conservation Award, reflecting our long-term care for the landscape.

7. Sustainable Travel

  • Information provided to guests on walking routes, cycle networks, local bus services and car-free options for accessing local attractions.
  • On-site bike storage available.
  • We promote low-impact travel choices before arrival and during the stay.
  • We are exploring opening an e-bike hire facility

8. Ethical & Sustainable Procurement

  • Preference given to suppliers with strong environmental credentials, reduced packaging and sustainable materials.
  • Cleaning products and consumables chosen for environmental safety and longevity.
  • Local trades, food producers and service providers are prioritised to support the local economy and reduce transport impact.

9. Supporting Our Community

  • We maintain positive local relationships and support community initiatives.
  • Guests are signposted toward local businesses, farm shops, independent producers and activities.
  • We work respectfully with neighbours and schools and provide open space for community benefit where appropriate.

10. Experiences & Interpretation

  • Guests are encouraged to connect with nature and understand our environmental efforts through clear, informal communication.
  • On-site messaging helps guests recycle correctly, protect wildlife, save water and respect the environment.
  • Our unusual play equipment and open natural spaces help children engage with the outdoors in a more adventurous, imaginative way.

11. Communication, Engagement & Continuous Improvement

  • Sustainability messages are shared via booking communications, on-site signage, team training and face-to-face interactions.
  • Feedback from guests and staff is reviewed as part of our improvement cycle.
  • Each year we update our goals, review energy and waste data, and adjust our approach based on what we’ve learned.

Our Aim

To run Petruth Paddocks in a way that protects nature, uses resources responsibly, supports our community and offers guests a genuinely low-impact, nature-rich place to stay.
